Basically the idea is to push yourself for short intervals such that you’re out of breath and feel that you won’t be able to keep it up for much longer. We advocate just such a regimen in the elliptical workout we have designed with a video that can be found here. Really the point of all this is that if you want to stay youthful you will have to work at it with difficult workouts. Strength training is also important. I would take issue with the conclusions of the referenced article that stretching is very important. Actually there is little if any data to support this. Stretch if you like but the proven benefits come from getting your heart up and strength training. And the strength training must be done carefully. For example they advocate “squats” in this article which is a bad exercise for most people because of the knee and back injury it often causes. Our physical therapists provide custom workouts for our patients designed to improve fitness, and longevity, while avoiding injury.
