That is common in diabetes. But now we know that they can come with a terrible price – amputation of a body part, usually the foot or leg. Part of the answer is to use other medications to help control hypertension in Diabetes. However the best answer is a much greater emphasis on weight loss first for diabetics who are overweight – as the vast majority of type two diabetics in the United States are. Indeed, in many patients hypertension goes away completely when patients are lean – meaning a BMI under 25. Unfortunately, less and less emphasis is placed on counseling for weight loss and more and more on the use of drugs. And as with many drugs, adverse events associated with them are usually underappreciated when the drugs are introduced, only to become apparent later, as in this study.
